Once the fun festivities have faded and the new years celebrations have ceased, the rest of the winter months can be a bit of a drag. The cold season can be pretty rough for most people, simply because we’re all staying in doors more, getting less sun, and it’s all too easy for us to be drained of energy both physically and mentally thanks to the shorter days.
It’s more important than ever to stay motivated and productive during the winter days because by putting the effort in now, you’ll be setting the tone for the rest of the year. Everything from your nutritional meal prep plans, to your sleeping habits needs to be prioritised. So, with this in mind we’ve got some tips to help you stay happy, healthy, and ready to combat the woes of winter…
Nutrition is even more important during the dark days of winter, because you’re body will need the right balance of food that can give you energy, boost your immune system and keep your body powering through the cold, flu-filled season. Make use of meal prepping to save yourself time, help you lose weight by planning out your meals, and feel healthier because you’ll be less tempted to reach for processed foods or snacks.
Get some fresh air
Many of us work indoors, and when we get up and go home in the dark it can be difficult to see any actual daylight in the winter weeks. It’s really important that you find some time during the day to get outside. Even if it’s just for an hour or so during the day, the fresh air will re-energise you, no matter whether the sun is shining or the skies are grey. Make some special plans
Summer can seem like the only time of year to plan some fun activities and trips with friends or family, leaving you to become somewhat of an antisocial hermit in winter. Make a point to go and see the people you care about, and get involved in events and activities you’re interested in.
Winter can have a lethargic effect on people, so to fight this it’s vital that you keep as physically active as possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean joining a gym, because there are plenty of exercises you can do without a gym. Little things, like going for a brisk walk or taking the stairs at work can work wonders for your physical and mental wellbeing, and can help to keep you from sinking into the winter slump.
Prioritise your sleep
You’ll need to be at your best to combat the cold and flu season, and simply getting the right amount of quality sleep can be one of the best things to prevent yourself from getting laid up for days at a time. When we deprive ourselves of sleep time, it can raise the risk of numerous health complications, from diabetes to heart disease, and can end up weakening the body’s immune system. There’s also a huge mental cost to not getting the right amount of shut-eye, impairing everything from memory to reaction times. So, in order to stay as happy and productive as possible, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to snooze.
