Knowing the Difference Between Gluten Free & Coeliac
Coeliac disease & gluten free are on the same spectrum, but the difference in the immune response is entirely different.
With nutrition & healthy eating on the rise and doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon, one also has to realise that allergies & intolerances are also very common but the most common one that I’m coming across at the moment is gluten free/coeliac.
People tend to tar both of these with the same brush, HOW WRONG ARE YOU!!!
Yes, they both effect the body but coeliac disease is a lifelong autoimmune condition triggered by eating food that contain gluten, in simpler terms your body has reached the gluten threshold therefore gluten in your diet will just attach the lining of the small intestine.
Gluten intolerance however still should be taken seriously, but doesn’t affect the immune system but often results in gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pains – cramping, bloating & diarrhoea, but does not lead to intestinal damage.
Unlike coeliac disease, wheat allergies can be outgrown; it’s just about choosing the correct foods and knowing what’s in said products.
Where you think a product is safe to eat, it may not be; just because a product isn’t jumping out at you on the shelf saying ‘pick me I’m gluten free’ doesn’t mean that some ingredients in the product do not contain wheat.
