Returning To The Gym After Lockdown

Don’t Overdo It

Even if you’ve stuck to a consistent workout routine over lockdown, it will still take some time for your body to adjust to using heavier weights and the machines again. To avoid burnout or injury, start light with each exercise, focusing on perfecting your form and keeping the movement controlled. Once this feels comfortable, try increasing your reps before eventually moving on to heavier weights. Remember to listen to your body and do whatever feels right at the time.

Prep The Night Before 

You’re much more likely to be that person who springs out of bed excited for the gym if all you have to do is brush your teeth and get changed. Pack your gym bag, prep your meals for the week ahead, and try and grab an early night so you have plenty of energy to take on your first workout. 

Check Your Gym’s App or Website

Having worked out in your own space with minimal social interaction for several months, we totally understand why you might be feeling a little apprehensive about going back to the gym. Check your gym’s website or app to see how busy it is and read up on any COVID guidelines they have in place to help put your mind at ease. If you turn up and don’t really feel up to it, you could always come back later when it’s quieter or head out for a walk instead.

Try Something New

Getting back into the gym shouldn’t feel like a chore. Exercise is so much fun when you’re doing something you actually enjoy, and if weight training just isn’t cutting it anymore, give a Zumba or Spin class a go. You might just discover a new hobby and make some friends along the way. 

Take Time To Recover 

Recovery and down time is so important when returning to the gym. As well as taking rest days and getting a good night’s sleep, your nutrition plays a huge part in muscle recovery. Make sure you’re getting plenty of protein in your diet to help repair your muscles and reduce soreness.

Be Kind To Yourself 

Getting back into the gym after a long break is never easy, so don’t beat yourself up if you have to cut your session short or swap your exercises for low-impact ones. You’ve shown up and that’s all that matters.
